  • Learn key theories of literature and science fiction, and hear the music of Herbert's writing

  • Explore the design of Frank Herbert's universe, from ecology to economy--and from beauty to terror

  • Understand Dune's relationship to psychology, philosophy, social science, history, and religion

  • Get fresh insights about verbal and visual images, and see the Dune films with new eyes

The first class meeting is Sunday August 4. See you then!

Instructor

Christopher Pizzino

Professor

For more than twenty-five years, I've helped people explore literature, film, art, and philosophy. I love being a part of others’ intellectual journeys, from beginning writers to PhD candidates. I’ve published scholarship with the Modern Language Association and Oxford University Press, among many others, but my deepest grounding is in the classroom, whether in person or online. My courses are built to revitalize your perceptions and thought patterns, connecting what you read, hear, and see to how you live and the history you share. All courses are centered on live meetings, giving you sustained space to listen to yourself, and others, through real human interaction. To create the best possible context for our meetings, I bring in readings from many fields, helping you build confidence with a range of perspectives. In the meetings themselves, I combine brief lectures to clarify concepts with sustained discussions to deepen understanding. Former student? Welcome back! New student? Glad to see you! I look forward to meeting new faces just as much as I’m happy to greet familiar ones. See you in class.
